Commissioners Special Meeting

Commissioner Percy Brown, Jr. called the special meeting of the Hancock County Commissioners to order at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010, in the commissioners meeting room of the Hancock County Courthouse with Commissioners Joy and Lawson in attendance.

Participants in the tax appeal hearing of FitzGerald v. the Town of Swan’s Island were sworn in, burden of proof instructions were given and testimony was heard. Audio tapes of the hearing are available, upon request, in the commissioners’ office.

Commissioner Brown declared the hearing closed at 10:48 a.m., deliberations will be held within 30 days. Participants were encouraged to work out their issues prior to deliberations

Commissioner Brown called the tax appeal hearing of Patten v. the Town of Swan’s Island to order at 11:00 a.m. Participants were sworn in, burden of proof instructions were given and testimony was heard. Audio tapes of the hearing are available, upon request, in the commissioners’ office. Agent William Banks represented the interest of George and Julie Patten.

Commissioner Brow declared the hearing closed at 11:49 a.m., deliberations will be held within 30 days. Participants were encouraged to work out their issues prior to deliberations

MOTION: to authorize the county to send out warrants for assessing the towns and unorganized places their portion of the county tax. (Joy/Lawson)

DISCUSSION: CFO Roy requested the commissioners to authorize the 2% overlay rather than the lesser proposed amount. This was tentatively approved by each commissioner. Motion passed 3-0.

MOTION: to set the interest rate on delinquent taxes at 8%. (Lawson/Joy 3-0, motion passed)
